It was originally founded in 1898 as the Philippine branch of an American-owned shipping firm based in San Francisco, in the United States. Under American ownership, Macondray was incorporated in 1960 and operated as a trading firm in the Philippines.

Macondray was acquired from the Americans by the Lorenzo family in 1990. Under Filipino management, the company grew into a business conglomerate focused on areas where its experience, capabilities, and networks could realize high growth potentials and sustained profitability. It developed and managed subsidiaries in the food, packaging, trading, and distribution industries. Today, Macondray continues to evolve and innovate.
